The past few years have seen the burgeoning of sociological approaches to the European Union (EU). The objective of this special issue is not to develop a sociology of the EU, but to evaluate how useful sociological insights can be incorporated in the political science of the EU.The articles in this special issue outline how and under what conditions sociological work can be incorporated into European integration theory’s major approaches: constructivism, institutionalism, multi-level governance (MLG) and intergovernmentalism.
