Inhalt

Akánig má avka šaj vakeras, asar kamas, cak má náne kasaha te vakeren. “Today we can talk as much as we want but there’s nobody left to talk to”, a speaker of South Central Romani said to me once after listing all the reasons that in his opinion have led to language shift in his village. He himself thought that society’s attitude towards Romani was changing for the better, perhaps also thanks to standardization efforts related to the Vlax Romani dialect in Hungary. It is, however, questionable, whether in the case of South Central Romani it is not too late.

This collection’s main purpose is to contribute to the documentation of the disappearing varieties of Romani in Hungary. Therefore it is intended mainly for those interested in the Romani language and its dialects. However, based on the content of the texts, it can also serve as an interesting and enjoyable piece of reading for anyone eager to immerse themselves into the world of fairytales, ghost stories and magic.
