It's a prime example of that kind of modern music that gets called jazz for want of any other label. Yet apart from the fact that it is a quartet, led by a saxophone, with a commitment to explorative improvisation, it has very little in common with the American artform in its popular sense. If the classical music listening camp did not have such a deep antipathy to improvisation then this might well be considered to have more in common with modern chamber music. Indeeed, to my synaesthetic hearing this music has more resonance with the traditions of expressionist painting, as laid down in early twentieth century Europe. It does not swing and it not rely on the ballad as its formal basis. I think of this as Euro-jazz, having roots far more ancient and serious than one finds in the arts of the bright, new civilisation of the transatlantic. John Ferngrove
