The series Vita Mathematica traces the professional lives of many of the world's great mathematicians - from antiquity to the present day. The books are not written primarily for historians of mathematics. Rather, they address students of mathematics, physics and technical sciences, teachers of these subjects and mathematicians and physicists who would like to study the cultural and historial context in which their special fields of expertise are grounded. \par In this mathematician-biography is traced Wiener's (1894-1964) entire reaction with his environment, starting from his precocious childhood and training in mathematics, zoology and philosophy and terminating with his full maturity and death. His contributions to philosophy, science and engineering, and his views on art and religion are traced, and stress is laid on his considerable interaction with other great minds of his time. Crucial parts of his correspondence as well as documents with the Defence Department are published for the first time.
