There's little evidence of Steve Miller as guitar hero on 'Brave New World'. Instead, it's the heavy, yet energetic rhythm section which dominates most of the album. While there is a trippy feel to some of the songs, therefore, this is an unusual rock album for its time. The title track has an infectious swing to it and the pace only lets up with the gentler 'Kow Kow' and 'Seasons', both of which are superb. Some of the material is referenced on later albums, 'Space Cowboy' becoming a pet theme for Miller on his chart-topping 'The Joker' while the riff from 'My Dark Hour' resurfaces on another better-known song, 'Fly Like An Eagle'.

Paul Ramon, who is credited as playing on 'My Dark Hour', is actually Paul McCartney. While his contribution to this wonderfully belligerent track does not stand out, McCartney has commented that he really took it out on his bass guitar. John Lennon had just informed him that he was leaving The Beatles.

At just half an hour, 'My Brave World' passes briskly, but apart from the over-enthusiastic 'Can't You Hear My Daddy's Heartbeat' and Lonnie Turner's out of place party piece, this is a feisty, sometimes ferocious album. J. H. Thorn
