Hot Tuna's fifth album saw them abandon the blues/folk stylings of their early 70's work in favour of full tilt blues rock with guitar pyrotechnics ably supplied by the superb attack of Jorma Kaukonen accompanied as ever by bass legend Jack Casady. That said the album opens rather curiously where their previous one 'Phosphorescent Rat' left off with the melodic wistful West Coast folk/rock of 'Sleep Song'. It's still accompanied by wonderful soloing from Jorma but once 'Funky #7' kicks in with it's sinuous bluesy funk the album truly kicks in. With a grungey take of Robert Johnson's classic 'Walking Blues' that sludges along with some fuzz bass from Casady it's clear where Tuna are headed - as usual it's the blues that holds them in thrall but this time they crank up the amps and swirl the ensuing noise from speaker to speaker and head for hard rock heaven!
