Inhalt

This was the last Spirogyra album and it's the best. Musically it falls in the folk genre although this is only a broad statement at it has progressive and psychedelic elements to the music (especially in the opening 'The Furthest Point' and closing 'The Western World'). The latter song is actually is suite of four different songs with classical elements which builds to a marvellous crescendo. It's very moving. Also very moving is 'An Everyday Consumption Song', which is more in the wyrd/ acid folk vein. This song is very chilling (that flute hovering in the background is awesome!) with biting lyrics that are perhaps more relevant now than they were in 1973 when this album was originally released.
All the songs were written by Martin Cockerham, and I have to say that he is a very talented songwriter. His vocal is perhaps best described as an acquired taste (clearly influenced by Bob Dylan) but he strains far less on this album than he does on the previous two. However they have a secret weapon in female singer Barbara Gaskins whose voice is like woven honey, and is absolutely gorgeous.
With moods that range from fragile despair to eerie beauty to intoxicating euphoria, [...]
