Roberts's study of the life and art of 18th-century French painter David attempts to relate both his personality and his participation in the French Revolution and other events of his lifetime to his artistic output. In doing so, Roberts incorporates much previous David scholarship, either to support earlier interpretations or to offer his own alternative ideas. Though marked by a sometimes strained unwillingness to view any of David's actions as anything but well motivated, this account of David's career is complete enough to be understood by those without prior knowledge of the painter or French history.
