Audience was a band with an unusal lineup of instrumentation that wasn't afraid to jump head first into territory dominated by the best prog rock bands of their time. Their lineup consists of acoustic guitar, sax, flute, bass and drums but notably no electric guitar (although the acoustic was often amplified) and no keyboard instruments. Just the same they could rock with the best of 'em. I get the feeling that guitarist Howard Werth may have been classically trained. The woodwind player Keith Gemmel could force notes out of a saxophone that almost didn't seem natural. And the drummer is the same Tony Connor that's been backing Hot Chocolate since the 70's, but here he comes across as a wild and extravagant percussionist. Together with some great storytelling their music is vibrant and paints a picture as colorful as the cover art on the album. Alan Brodie
