To celebrate her 60th birthday, Eileen Kay disobeyed her parents' old edicts, flew to Hungary and investigated their family mysteries. She knew nothing about her ancestors, knew no one there, and did not speak a word of the eccentric Hungarian language, but started with a few names and a lot of questions.

That one journey turned into 3 years of tenacious research, and the family tree grew to hundreds of characters.Like a detective story, their weird and wonderful saga unfolded, a surprising saga of mixed races and very mixed fortunes with a large international cast, spanning an ocean and over a century.

She embraced a long-lost cousin who was a Holocaust survivor, made young new friends, came to adore flodni cake, and before she knew it, Budapest officially declared her a resident.
