John Peel reputedly 'discovered' this band playing distorted feedback-addled blues in a shopping mall, and brought them to the UK where they later recorded psychedelic masterpieces like Children of the Sun etc...

Well, that's chapter 2 of the Misunderstood story. Here we find the band playing their blues repertoire at about the time Peelie stumbled upon them (disc 1) and later stuff recorded in the UK, after a few line-up changes (disc 2).

The first disc is reasonably competent blues covers, all very listenable, but there are really no out-and-out classics here. What separates the band from the other blues-garage bands of the era was perhaps lap-steel player Glen Campbell. The last song I'm Not Talking with its long droning feedback hints more at the road the band were soon to travel...

The second disc picks up the band several years later (NB. AFTER their classic psychedelic period - which you can find on the album Before the Dream Faded). Much heavier songs, and more drawn out. Great lap-steel solos and nice dirty guitar. Great vocals too. The first 3 songs are all fab. The other songs are also of a high standard. Of the two albums, this is the one I return to more, particularly when I fancy something slightly unhinged to wig out to. P. Whitehead
