Inhalt

Based on Jacques Offenbach's opera, this Technicolor spectacular follows the poet Hoffmann (Robert Rounseville) as he recounts the stories of his three great loves to a tavern audience.

He tells of Olympia (Moira Shearer), a mechanical doll he mistook for a real woman; Giulietta (Ludmilla Tchérina), a Venetian courtesan who stole his reflection; and Antonia (Ann Ayars), a consumptive singer who sang herself to death.

Combining opera and ballet, the film features the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Thomas Beecham and is celebrated for its production design by Hein Heckroth.
