"Alphaville": Jean-Luc Godard's dystopian vision of a future world in which technological progress has been at the expense of human individuality and love. Private eye Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) is sent to Alphaville, a city run by dictator scientist Professor von Braun (Howard Vernon). Lemmy's mission is to contact the professor and free him ... or if he refuses, kill him. Godard presents a world which somewhere between totalitarian dabness and garish modernity, unrecognisable as Paris where it was filmed in its entirety. "Une femme est une femme": Whom does a woman turn to when she wants to have a baby but her husband doesn't ... to the neighbour, of course! Or at least that is what she does according to Jean-Luc Godard. Take a lovelorn neighbour, mix in a strip-tease artist in love with her husband in love with his bicycle, put it all together and the result is a Nouvelle Vague version of the eternal triangle, with a twist. A classic with a fresh new way of looking at a couple's day life, where puns and parody turn tedium into laughter.
