In contemporary Tokyo, low-level thug Rikuo Ishimatsu saves a yakuza boss during a restaurant attack and is rewarded with entry into the clan, but his impulsive brutality and drug use quickly spin out of control. While he rises through the ranks through acts of extreme violence, his inability to respect any code of discipline turns him into a liability for his superiors and a danger to his lover, a waitress he has forced into a destructive relationship. After a prison term, Ishimatsu returns to the streets even more unstable and begins targeting his own organisation, triggering a relentless manhunt by both rival gangs and the police. The film portrays his descent as a bleak, uncompromising study of self-destruction that strips the yakuza myth of honour and glamour, characteristic of Takashi Miike’s fascination with violent outsiders.
