Inhalt

Overall though, the album is dominated by a frothing, busy energetic rack of latin percussion - hard and driving and punchy - that recalls Santana, but it's less funky and hip-swinging and more amphetamine-driven, the uptempo arrangements mashing the congas and bongos with the characteristic Quicksilver platinum-cascading lead guitar. Many of the songs are about prison, possibly based on Valente's own drug-bust penal experiences: titles like "Doin Time in the USA", "Forty Days" and "California State Correctional Facility Blues", giving the album a thematic core that is broken up by songs like the aforementioned "Changes" and the strutting "Chicken". Imagine early Santana meshed with the uptempo r'n'b-blues cuts from the first Steppenwolf album and you'll have a good idea of what this record is like....except it is better than both, less precious and more original, not trying too hard to be anything other than itself.
Stephen E. Andrews
