Quintessence's ethnically diverse line-up, fuelled by the radical creative and political alternativism of London's late '60's Ladbroke Grove scene, stewed a heady brew of jazzy, flute-led rock that could break out psych guitar and then noodle into sitar raga riffing with equanimity. By the release of this last gasp from 1972, the band lived in an ashram community, sported Hindu identities, and had ramped up the spirit levels in a sweet natured but rambling affair with too much filler. That said, there is redemption in the occasional nod to the album's gutsier antecedents, and the sprawling 'Bliss Trip', replete with atmospheric sonic seasonings, is pure incense. Rob Brook
