A vicar's daughter, engaged by a handsome bachelor to act as governess to his young niece and nephew, arrives at his country house in Essex. He gives her full charge of the children and explicitly states that she is not to bother him with communications of any sort. The governess begins to see around the grounds the figures of a man and woman whom she does not recognize, and who seem to be supernatural. When she learns whom they are, how they died, and of their previous intimacy with her charges, she becomes convinced that the two children are secretly aware of--and possibly in danger from--the ghosts.
