When, in Spring 1768, Luigi Boccherini settled permanently in Spain, his fame as a cello virtuoso had already spread across much of Europe. The arrival of the young man from Lucca meant not just the culmination of his apprenticeship with the commencement of a promising and substantial career as composer but also the onset of a stage marked at least in its first years by artistic and personal successes in the erudite and refined court of Prince Luis de Borbón. Until then, and as was to continue to be case until the end of his days, the undisputed protagonist of Boccherini’s musical was the cello, an instrument of most beautiful sonorities relegated at that time by the violin. Of the five works chosen by Josetxu Obregón for this disc, all composed in the decade from 1760 to 1770, those catalogued by Yves Gérard with numbers 4, 5 and 6 were published during the composer’s lifetime, while the manuscript of number 3 was conserved in a codex in Milan. All are works of the greatest quality which the members of the ensemble La Ritirata offer in absolutely authoritative versions in the ever-demanding catalogue of Boccherini recordings.(Verlagsangabe)
