Although the recording is rougher sonically than subsequent works, Sophisticated Beggar shows Roy Harper to be a fully formed artist from the outset on his debut album. Amongst the polemic longer tracks he became known for there are some surprising attempts at more poppy material (Big Fat Silver Aeroplane), as well as the shorter beautiful songs, such as Forever, which he would re-record on a later album.If you are a fan of Roy's late sixties / seventies work then you will not be disappointed by the number and quality of great songs on this album. Of the 13 tracks on this album I would say only around 3 are under par. Probably the stand out tracks are: China Girl, Sophisticated Beggar, Legend, October 12th, Forever which all combine Roy's trademark unusual tunings, lyrical acuity and beautiful melodies.Liam Devany
