The war in Bosina-Herzegovina which began in 1992 appalled millions, but was portrayed as an inexplicable squabble between primitive Balkan tribes. Despite the media's re-inforement of the British and other great-power government's lie that this was a 'civil war', many people wanted to do something which went beyond putting money in a box. People wanted somehow to 'take sides' with the Bosnians, to show that they weren't neutral in the face of 'ethnic cleansing' and genocide; if governments were going to stand by and allow a diverse, multicultcural society be destroyed, they weren't.

 

Taking sides is the story of how those people did try to do something about 'ethnic cleasnsing'. With over 200 photographs, including twelve pages of colour, a wealth of historical material as well as many personal anecdotes, Taking sides is the record of a unique campaign. Taking sides testifies, above all, to the determination of Bosnians to reject the labels assigned to them by western politicians and local nationalists alike, and to fight for their tradiiton of multi-culturalism and unity.
