The Upsetters at their most generic and Lee Perry at his laziest makes Africa's Blood a disappointing album. The vast majority of the record sounds like backing tracks, and in many cases they were, either that or throwaway instrumental B-sides. At his best, Perry could be counted on to create some of the most innovative rhythms around; at his worst, he could recycle a tedious rhythm ad nauseam. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the album features the latter. Of course the Upsetters were at the mercy of their producer/arranger/composer and were incapable of rectifying the situation on their own. Of the 14 tracks within, 11 are instrumentals, most of which spin their wheels going nowhere. Eventually you're left cheering the little things. Ooh, this one has some horns; whoo-hoo, a John Crow skank instead of that same old tired reggae riff; yea, a perky keyboard melody. However, amidst this aural wallpaper there's a few standouts. The instrumental "Well Dread" borrows its riff and beat from Eric Donaldson's "Cherry Oh Baby," but gives it a surprising twist with the addition of nyabingi style drums. "Do Your Thing" is a funk fired party piece, enlivened by the always exuberant Dave Barker, and there's an entertaining instrumental cover of the Motown hit "My Girl."
