The Fugs began their career as a true garage band. Their low fi recordings on ESP and Broadside bare testament to the sloppy performances and less than kosher recording quality.They eventually landed a contract with Reprise records (home of the rat pack).Unlikely label mates , the Fugs delivered a diverse selection of tunes about sex,drugs, rock and politics. There is a live recording of an exorcism where peace marchers lead by Ed Sanders attempted to exocism the evil spirits from the pentagon building. Also included is a hare krishna mantra, a 1950's style song titled Wet Dream about teen sexual fantasy.One great song called the Garden is Open featured electric violin and soarching guitar licks. The Fugs at this point had incorporated some real players into their fold.Dan Kootch was the violinist on this, and Ken Pine the guitarist. Another number,Dover Beach which they still play live, was adapted from a poem by Arnold.
