Early Steppenwolf was released by the band a few years into their fame, but oddly features recording made several years earlier at a small club called the Matrix in San Francisco. Back then Steppenwolf, or The Sparrow as they were in fact known, were mainly a covers band, picking up blues, r'n'b and folk numbers - the latter brought in by John Kay who started out as a folkie, guitar in hand playing the coffee-house scene. (Hard to picture that listening to Born to be Wild et al, but true I assure you). So you can put choices like Corinna Corinna and The Pusher down to John. The rest of the album features blues covers, but crackers they are. Howling for My Darling is a total re-write of the Howling Wolf original, with an insistent little riff throughout it, and I'm Going Upstairs is likewise light-years away from the John Lee Hooker original. In fact it ends up in a rave-up that is pure Yardbirds. (No bad thing!) One point before closing. The Pusher here is also a little.. er.. different to the song the band later recorded and appeared on the Easy Rider soundtrack. Here it's given the full psychedelic treatment, and the song itself (which is played fairly straight) is proceded by about 15 minutes of psychedelic Floyd-esque weirdness. More an 'Experience' than a song. Don't say I didn't tell you!
