Rotary Connection were conceived by Marshall Chess and Charles Stepney of the legendary Chess organisation, and really summarised the stranger side of the late sixties by delivering a bizarre amalgum of all things hippy and multi-cultural. This resulted in a sound that mixed soul, psychedelia, show music, blues, choral and rock. If that is possible.....

If you can imagine the show Hair, mixed with Jimi Hendrix, James Brown and the Swingle Singers - then you get the weird mixture conjured up by Stepney and his cohorts.

That obviously means this superb double CD of RC's very best material is an acquired taste, but it does reward the more demanding listener with rich arrangements and challenging versions of popular material such as Cream's Tale of Brave Ulysses and Sunshine Of Your Love.

This band is often derided as the launch pad of Stepney's producing career (Earth, Wind & Fire, Ramsey Lewis etc); and Minnie Ripperton's singing career (Loving You etc) - but this 2CD set will take you into all sorts of late 60's places that are equally original and compelling.

And of course, the cornerstone of any RC release is the incredible Black Gold Of The Sun - a vocal and instrumental piece the like of which you will never have heard, but bizarrely fits together and becomes wonderfully memorable. I guarantee that many prog rock bands have learned a huge amount from this great song & arrangement. It's almost certain that Jon Anderson of Yes was a fan. A. R. Durham
