Nirvana's third album was rejected by Chris Blackwell of Island Records and was released (then withrawn)in the UK on Pye International and in the US on Metromedia (who subsequently went bust)In spite of all the bad omens surrounding the album there was some very strong material in evidence, although in some cases they were becoming very middle of the road.Some of the songs come across as being written not for Nirvana but with other people in mind such as The World Is Cold Without You , Aline Cherie and Love Suite, so to that end It doesn't feel like a Nirvana album. They wouldn't be out of place in any television variety show that was on air at the time, such is the swing to the middle ground.

The real strength comes from songs like Black Flower and Illinois (covered by The New Seekers). Alex Spyropolous left after this album and the bands recordings arguably never reached these standards again, although the "Songs of Love and Praise" album was a slight return to form and a Patrick Campbell Lyons Solo Album "Me and My Friend" deserves a special mention.
