Bobby Timmons' solo on Art Blakey's Moanin' may be one of the finest moments in soul jazz, and the pianist used that signature style to catapult himself to minor success in the 60s, with hits like "Dis Here" and "Dat Dere." Many of the great records he made for Prestige and Riverside are now going out-of-print as OJC CDs, and I would encourage jazz fans to snatch up titles like Easy Does It,From the Bottom and Born to Be Blue before they disappear. Other titles though, like this Milestone two-fer featuring 1967's "Got to Get It!" and 1968's "Do You Know the Way?", are not as essential. A quarter of the disc is with orchestra, and despite the fact that it features players the likes of Jimmy Owens, Hubert Laws, James Moody, Joe Farrell, Ron Carter and Billy Higgins, those tracks are pretty uninspired, and the ones with cheesy broadway-style vocals are just plain bad. The four quartet numbers from December 4, 1967 are the album's best, with guitarist Joe Beck joining Carter and Jimmy Cobb. The '68 quartet material alternates between crossover and jazz, with Beck returning on five of the eight tracks, and bassist Bob Cranshaw (on electric) and drummer JackDeJohnette rounding out the group.
