Nach einer Abklärung der Probleme bei der Zuordnung lateinamerikanischer Parteien zur Sozialdemokratie und zur "Linken" analysieren europäische und amerikanische PolitologInnen in Länderstudien die politische Entwicklung in Venezuela, Bolivien, Nicaragua, Kuba, Mexiko, Brasilien, Chile und Argentinien. Ausgeleuchtet wird der Charakter der Veränderungen in Venezuela, der Reformweg in Kuba und die Reform des neoliberalen Kapitalismus in Argentinien. Neben den Problemen von Boliviens Staatspräsident Evo Morales bei der Umsetzung von politischen und sozialen Reformen wird die Rückkehr des Sandinisten Daniel Ortega an die Staatsspitze Nicaraguas und die Politik von Brasiliens Staatspräsident Luis Inacio Lula da Silva kritisch beleuchtet.
