Coming from a family of daring ladies, it's no surprise that Dulcie excels at soccer. As the annual match against a rival school approaches, she is furious to find that she cannot play on the all-boy team. On the day of the big game, one of the players discovers that his new uniform is too small and Dulcie steps in and inevitably wins the game. While the story is predictable, Gliori's illustrations are sprightly and amusing, done in bright watercolors with eye-catching layouts. Some readers may feel that the feminist angle is carried a bit too far--Dad is shown standing pigeon-toed at the ironing board while Dulcie's motorcycling mother does mechanical repairs on the kitchen table.
