Am 7. April 2015 jährte sich zum 100. Mal der Geburtstag von Billie Holiday (1915 – 1959). Auf dem Höhepunkt ihrer Karriere, in den swingenden 1930er Jahren, wurde die schwarze Künstlerin, die zwischen 1933 und 1959 rund 350 Titel auf Schallplatten aufnahm; von Publikum und Kritik als die größte aller Jazzsängerinnen gefeiert. Diese schöne Box präsentiert zum Jubiläum auf zehn CDs 15 ihrer späten Original-Alben mit Aufnahmen aus den Jahren 1945 bis 1958.
John Hammond entdeckte sie 1933 und holte sie für erste Plattenaufnahmen mit Benny Goodman ins Studio. Danach ging es mit ihrer Karriere rasant bergauf Aufnahmen wie beispielsweise „Strange Fruit“ (1939), eine ergreifende Anklage gegen die Lynchjustiz an Schwarzen in den Südstaaten, „Fine And Mellow“ (1939) und „Lover Man“ (1944) wurden große kommerzielle Erfolge.1944 wurde sie – auf dem Höhepunkt ihres Ruhmes – als erste Jazzsängerin im Metropolitan Opera House triumphal gefeiert. Zwischen 1946 und 1949 entstanden für Decca Billies Aufnahme-Sessions zur LP „The Blues Are Brewin` “ (CD8) u.a. mit zwei Duetten mit Louis Armstrong („My Sweet Hunk O`Trash“ und „You Can`t Loose A Broken Heart“). Mehrmals kam Billie Holiday nun auch aufgrund ihrer Drogenabhängigkeit mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt, wurde wegen Besitz und Gebrauch von Rauschgift verhaftet und zu einem Jahr Gefängnis verurteilt. Im Februar 1948 entlassen, gab sie in New York ein umjubeltes Konzert in der Carnegie Hall. Danach betrat sie kein Aufnahmestudio mehr, bis sie anfing mit Norman Granz zu arbeiten.
