Léo Ferré remains a real enigma though recognised as an immense poet, his real passion in life, the one that inspired him more than anything else, was music; music came before everything, it was first and foremost, the music of orchestras and that of the voice, without which, he said, “poetry has difficulty in assuming its virility” (Préface). Throughout his life this “damned poet and accursed musician” tried in vain to achieve recognition as a musician but received only limited respect of the sort properly trained musicians deign to grant towards those who are self-taught, however brilliant they may be. Most of the songs presented here back up Léo’s claim to be considered as an authentic poet and authentic musician. They testify to the quality of his writing with both words and music, and are proof of Léo’s talent at bringing together and marrying these two forms of expression successfully. Over and above surface appearances, these songs express certain feelings and sensations, and through these, together with the bouts of anger they scarcely manage to conceal at times, we are transported into a complex but wonderful (in every sense of the term) world. Early works they may be, but they already hint at the whole revolution in chanson lurking inside their lines the chanson Léo Ferré, more than any of his contemporaries, worked so passionately at to lift it out of mediocrity.
