Humphrey Bogart stars as James Carmody, an American fighter pilot turned adventurer in 1947 China. To escape the wrath of a savage warlord (Lee J. Cobb), he masquerades as a man of God. While hiding out in a remote Catholic mission, Carmody finds he is comfortable posing as a priest and restores some order to the feuding villages in the area. However things change when he falls in love with a beautiful nurse, Anne (Gene Tierney) who, though ashamed of her feelings, is drawn to him.
