"Rocky Austria" explains the complex geological history of Austria‘s mountainous country in a comprehensive way. It starts with a walk through the landscapes of Austria from north to south. It is followed by a brief introduction to the principles of plate tectonics, the associated cycle or succession of rocks and to the methods used for the temporal division of the Earth’s history. In the third section the geological building blocks (the tectonic units) in Austria are explained in greater detail related to tectonic and palaeogeographic aspects. Finally, the history of the geological evolution of the Austrian rocks is illustrated. The story includes accounts of the oldest rocks, of the rise and fall of oceans, of the uplift and erosion of mountains, of volcanoes and ice ages. It concludes with landslides and earthquakes that are associated with the on-going movements of the Earth. A Geological Map of Austria at the scale of 1 : 1 500 000 and corresponding cross-sections illustrate by their colour the major tectonic units.
