Im Chicago der vierziger Jahre hatten zwei polnische Einwanderer, die Chess Brüder, ein florierendes Alkohol- und Bargewerbe mit Live Entertainment etabliert und auch schon erste Erfahrungen mit Plattenfirmen und Blues Musikern. 1950 gründeten sie Chess Records, das zum wichtigsten Blues Label für die nächsten zwei Jahrzehnte rasend schnell avancierte. Ihre wichtigsten Künstler waren Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Memphis Slim, Little Walter, Otis Spann, John Lee Hooker und später Bo Diddley und Chuck Berry. Als wichtigster Komponist und Produzent spann Dixon bei fast allen Produktionen die Fäden, der Mann, dem Led Zeppelin in den 1970er Jahren Millionen ausschütten mussten, weil ihnen im Schnelldurchgang zum Weltruhm einige Plagiate unterlaufen waren. :-)
