Inhalt

Bello's contribution provides a Southern perspective on the system of global economic governance dominated by the IMF, World Bank, WTO and G-8. The book critiques the policies of these institutions in their stated aim of poverty reduction and highlights the 'destructiveness of unchecked capital mobility' . In essence this short book explores the mechanisms that are enforcing the (US led) doctrine of extensive international trade liberalisation. This is achieved by mapping briefly the rise of these institutions and the accompanying assault on the UN by rich Northern countries, especially the UNCTAD that is perceived as an inconvenient advocate for Southern demands for improved rules of international trade. Bello illuminates the dominant power of the US and the opaque decision-making processes of these global institutions. Building upon the use of earlier examples of the failure of these institutions in their use of structural adjustment programmes, and during the Asian financial crisis of 1997 and the Argentinean collapse of 2002, Bello is able to illustrate why these institutions are facing a severe crisis of legitimacy. This book is written in a short and accessible style and is therefore ideal for students (and its intended audience - activists) to gain a broad understanding of the debates about the key global economic governance institutions.
