This is a cool little album, full of snappy rockers, punchy covers and great musicianship. The band's problem, then as ever, is that they were simply doing the right thing at the wrong time. Concise rock and roll wasn't the order of the day in the late 60s. Jamming, blues-rock, hard-rock and early Prog was making the waves, and a band like the Flamin' Groovies, who favoured snappy hooks, a sense of humour and a good-timey vibe without over-amping the guitars or over-extending the solos were always going to struggle. Their determination to follow their own path found them out of favour when Punk was happening - they'd been doing Punk Rock years before, and better, too, but their slavish devotion to the sounds of sixties harmony pop and twelve-string electric jangles jarred with the 1977 Punk orthodoxy. No matter, their's is a slim but satisfying body of work, and 'Supersnazz' is as good a place to start as any.
