Thankfully this reissue has sequenced the track listing as it originally was meant to be when it was first issued on Vertigo and this gives it much better continuity than the American version. This is future Uriah Heep man John Lawton first excursion and he really is on fine form throughout. Opening with the Deep Purple-ish 'Hobo' you might be fooled into thinking this is another of these second division early seventies German heavy rock clones. This track is the weak link in what is an otherwise great and original album. The lengthy 'rose on the vine' has a guitar riff to die for and complex time changes, the standout track 'mother' has some great electric violin and piano and the lengthy 'summer dream suite' has an amazing string arrangement. What sets this album apart is that the heavy rock leanings are interspersed with weird arrangements and echoing piano making it one of those albums that grows on you. The one down side is that the production is pretty crap, guitars are mixed down and the whole sound is flat. After this they went more proggy, but if you want inventive music in a heavy rock vein check this and the first album out. To think two of the members were in the James Last Orchestra. Rock on!
