The conventional wisdom is that Spooky Two is the bands high point - hard to argue with maybe, but you will find out there fans like me who have believed for thirty years that this is the album they were always meant to make.Witness is a triumph on all levels, but don't expect instant bowling over - this is a deep,wide river of an album and needs time and many plays before it sweeps forever into your soul. Initially I missed Luther Grosvenor's flashing riffs, but then realisation dawns that Mick Jones' pre-Foreigner guitars are perfectly pitched in support of the songs. And whats songs, only 9 but arguably Gary Wrights best; ostensibly simple but also subtle, keeping them always fresh and interesting. And of course, you have the two best rock vocalists of all time, stretching out at the tip-top of their game.When you add in Kellies unique, propelling drumming glued to Chris Stewarts deep and sturdy bass supporting the textures of Wrights keyboards and Jones' guitar, you have the richest of full-band sounds. But its the songs and voices that keep you coming back, particularily the final three tracks where the peerless Mike Harrison and Gary share the verses, as only they can. R. Wilkinson
