Many never expected the day to arrive: the moment when the 25 minutes of footage excised against Lang’s wishes by distributors on both sides of the Atlantic would be rediscovered. And yet 81 years after the film’s initial première (and following the release of successive restorations which could only ever synopsise the lost scenes with the insertion of ‘stopgap’ title cards), the dream scenario came to pass: the missing footage was found in the archives of Buenos Aires’ Museo del Cine. The story of the discovery (and how the footage wound up there in the first place) is now part of the history of Metropolis itself, and is recounted across the supplements accompanying our new editions of this integral, 150-minute version of the film as reconstructed and restored over the last two years through a joint effort of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden, the Deutsche Kinemathek in Berlin, and the Museo del Cine in Buenos Aires.
