For fans some of these songs will be familiar but these recordings will be a revelation to new and old fans. Given a tape recorder by his then manager these songs are played with no eye to charts and acceptance - just the need to pour his artistic sensibility out. The songs are raw and uncompromising and often experimental.

Coyne should be better known but his refusal to compromise often took his career in the opposite direction most would choose to take. Have a band featuring Police's Andy Summer - disband it, ask to join the Doors - turn it down, get to meet John Lydon a fan - go to a party instead. When on Cherry Red and featured on their best selling compilation Pillows And Prayers disappear to Germany and fall off the radar. Still though he had his supporters - Will Oldham recorded some of his songs and recently did the whole Babble album live on tour. John Peel is mentioned in every band history trying to convey a certain hipness but Kevin Coyne was the real thing. Signed to Peel's label Dandelion as part of the band Siren and then as a solo, he is also in the list of the 10 bands with the most Peel Sessions to their name.

This album is a great introduction to a huge catalogue of releases of 40 plus albums. Some of you will find that his music is too challenging others will find they are drawn into his world of songs of real life love, heart break, mental trauma and breakdowns.
