Sister Outsider is a collection of essays focusing on race/racism, gender/sexism, sexual identity, and social class as these are enacted in a white-supremist, heterosexist, capitalist patriarchy (i.e. the United States). As a Black woman, lesbian, feminist, mother, poet, essayist, and political activist, Lorde's essays in this collection include her often quoted "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House," an essay that radically challenges how white people "learn about" racism, or how men "learn about" women: "Women of today are still being called upon to stretch across the gap of male ignorance and to educate men as to our existence and our needs. This is an old and primary tool of all oppressors to keep the oppressed occupied with the master's concerns . . . ."Her essay "Poetry is Not a Luxury" suggests that poetry is "illumination," and is a way to wed ideas and feeling, a way "we help give name to the nameless so it can be thought. The farthest horizons of our hopes and fears are cobbled by our poems, carved from the rock experiences of our daily lives." Other titles include "Sexism: An American Disease in Blackface," "Man Child: A Black Lesbian Feminist's Response" (on being the lesbian mother of a son), and "The Uses of Anger: Women Respond to Racism." Commentary I would recommend this book in part or whole for discussions of racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism. Lorde's narrative is radical, often angry, always confrontational, and this makes readers--especially middle-class, well-educated medical students (and faculty) uncomfortable and often defensive.The most provocative issue raised in the book may be her belief that those of us who are in the position of oppressor (white people, for example), must EDUCATE OURSELVES and not wait for or expect persons of color to do it for us, to tell us "how it is." This means reading, listening, watching, critiquing ourselves and our culture (including the culture of medicine)--and recognizing that unlearning racism is a life-long task, that no one is immune, including those who take an oath to provide health care to others. The power of the book for medical professionals is its confrontation with the racism in all of us, which forces us to find the hidden, nuanced ways racism is enacted in medicine. "Perhaps ... I am the face of one of your fears. Because I am a woman, because I am Black, because I am a lesbian, because I am myself -- a Black woman warrior poet doing my work -- come to ask you, are you doing yours?" This is how Audre Lorde introduces herself in a paper entitled "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action." Audre Lorde takes personal responsibility for this essential, perpetual transformation. In Sister Outsider she enters into dialogue with listeners and readers, lending us her voice and challenging us to speak and act for ourselves. She insists that we pay attention, that we confront the limitations we set upon ourselves and each other; her words have weight and resonance because she listens as rigorously as she speaks. She asks and risks more of herself than might seem possible; the political is personal on many levels of her life. She writes about facing the threat of cancer, about being part of an interracial lesbian couple raising a son, about sex, poetry, rage, and restraint. She is a fiercely intelligent writer, addressing racism, sexism, and heterosexism from the heart of her individual experience as an African-American, lesbian poet/warrior. Audre Lorde demonstrates how each of us must speak for and from our most intimate knowledge, yet simultaneously extend the boundaries around ourselves to include the "outsider," to include more than we have been, more than we thought we could imagine. Begleitet werden die Zeichnungen von Textausschnitten und Audioaufnahmen Gloria Anzaldúas.Der Vortrag "Feminismus in Lateinamerika und dessen antirassistische und deskoloniale Beiträge: Eine Genealogie der Gegenwart" von Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso, eine antirassistische und deskoloniale Feministin afrodominikanischer Herkunft, wird in Form eines Videos zu sehen sein.Eine Landkarte Lateinamerikas zeigt die Ergebnisse eines Kinderworkshops zu Schwarzen und Indigenen Dichterinnen aus Lateinamerika.Die Teilnehmerinnen des Fotoworkshops "Nepantleras fotografiando" präsentieren ihre Interpretationen von Gloria Anzaldúas Zeichnungen in Form von Fotografien.Eine Auswahl an Büchern aus dem Bestand der Hauptbücherei und Neuankäufe werden die Ausstellung thematisch begleiten.

La exposición A(r)mando Vo(i)ces en la Hauptbücherei de Viena une diferentes elementos: Una galería de pensamientos de Gloria Anzaldúa, la voz de Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso, la poesía de color, poetas negras e indígenas, Nepantleras fotografiando y libros que acompañan.Por primera vez en Austria se exponen dibujos de Gloria Anzaldúa, quien se autoproclamó "chicana, tejana, de clase trabajadora, poeta, tortillera-feminista, escritora-teórica". La muestra "Entre Palabra e Imagen, Galería del pensamiento de Gloria Anzaldúa" que se expuso en E.E.U.U. y en México muestra una selección de dibujos que presentó en talleres y conferencias y que forman parte de la Benson Latin American Collection University Texas at Austin. La muestra se complemtenta con textos y grabaciones de audio de Gloria Anzaldúa.La charla "Feminismos en América Latina y las apuestas antirracistas y descoloniales: una genealogía del presente" de Yuderkys Espinosa Miñoso, feminista antirracista y descolonial de origen afrodominicano, será presentada en vídeo.Un mapa de Latino América muestra los resultados de un taller infantil sobre poetas negras e indígenas de Latino América.Las participantes del taller de fotografía "Nepantleras fotografiando" presentan su interpretación de los dibujos de Gloria Anzaldúa a través de la fotografía.Una selección de libros de la Bücherein Wien y nuevas adquisiciones acompañan también la temática de esta exposición.Verena Melgarejo Weinandt es artista y curadora.
