Inspired by a painting exercise, "One Hundred Demons," that she learned about at the library, Barry decided to exorcise memories and events that haunt her by trying it out in her primary medium, comics. Most of her demons arise from childhood traumas of the sort detailed in her weekly strip, "Ernie Pook's Comeek." They include old boyfriends, mothers and grandmas, people who lied to her, people she lied to, hippies, abused dogs, doing acid, and last year's presidential election. The 17 vignettes in the book, which originally appeared online, are longer than her normal four-panel strips and also more genuinely autobiographical (Barry calls them autobifictionalgraphy). The additional length lets her stretch out and work in color, which makes her lively, expressive drawings even more vivid. Even if Barry's demons may not be yours, most people should still recognize them and find them moving. The book's only big shortcoming is that it doesn't depict all 100 of the demons the title promises. Maybe she'll tackle more in a future collection. (American Library Association)
