He tends to be regarded now as the father of the Mississippi blues. We don't really know, because we don't know those who went before him. Undoubtedly he was influential, and neither Howlin' Wolf or Tommy McLennan would have sounded as they do had he not gone before them. He didn't have the idiosyncrasies of Tommy Johnson or Skip James but he was a powerful singer and could handle his guitar, according to H. C. Speir, who arranged for him to record, 'outta this world'.This set contains all his recordings. The first session has just Patton accompanying himself on guitar, the second session the same but with Henry Sims added occasionally on single string fiddle, next is Patton accompanied by Willie Brown on second guitar, and the last session with Bertha Lee offering occasional vocal accompaniment. There are then a few odd tracks at the end of the third disc with Sims (who was an appealing fiddle player but not much of a singer) taking centre stage and two final tracks where Bertha Lee, who was Charley's wife, sings powerfully and very effectively.Sound quality is not bad. There is some surface noise on some tracks but quite tolerable. I recommend this very strongly although you will have to listen to it a few times before you get the full message.Bob Murray
