'War dance' was the final album by Colosseumn 2 ¿ a more obviously rock-oriented version of Jon Hiseman's pioneering 1960s jazz-fusion band. The change in nature may have been partly to do with the mood of the '70s, partly to do with the approach to composition, but another reason could well have been the use of guitar as a lead instrument instead of the saxophone of Dick Heckstall-Smith.So in came Gary Moore ¿ once of Skid Row, but best known for his work with Thin Lizzy. But if you think this a strange choice to be playing alongside musicians the calibre of bass player John Mole, keyboardist Don Airey and Hiseman himself, suspend your disbelief and take a listen to this album. Moore's playing with this band was possibly the most impressive period of his career ¿ at least technically ¿ as he revealed a depth of ability, discipline and invention not normally associated with a background in relatively mainstream hard rock. The music falls somewhere between progressive instrumental rock and jazz-rock, and Moore's vocal on the one (rather insipid) song can be forgiven alongside the brilliance of his overall contribution.And this applies to all the band ¿ Mole's inventive and driving baselines, Airey covering so many bases (organ, synths, electric piano) with taste and ease, and Hiseman's dynamic, powerful and elegant percussive thrust. As well as the title piece, highlight tracks 'Fighting talk', 'Put it that way' and 'The inquisition' are a fine example of four excellent musicians creating the sort of music which simply wouldn't happen here in the bland digital early 21st century, and a reminder of how daring music sometimes used to be.
